Fresh from the horrors of the Russian front and German-occupied Poland, Malaparte is sick of his life and desires. In Part Two, Malaparte passes through the crisis of his sickness in a cabin on the outskirts of Jassy. A pogrom is in the making; it is not Malaparte's sickness that is erupting but that of the world. Malaparte would do something grand to stop this madness, but his words and gestures fall short. In Part Three, Malaparte escapes from Jassy where he has been arrested. In Naples, he finds the Americans are the conquering army. The murders have ceased, but there is no end to the humiliations and suffering of the children. Unable to feel, he is inconsolable. Malaparte returns to Capri to put into fiery images all that he has seen.
