An enfant terrible of Italian letters, Curzio Malaparte was a World War I hero and author of The Technique of the Coup d'Etat, a book admired by Hitler. His post-war novel Kaputt was an international best-seller. At first a defender and later a critic of fascism, Malaparte was exiled and then imprisoned by Mussolini. Upon his release, he was sent to the Eastern Front where, wearing the uniform of an Italian Army captain, he covered the German advance. There, he wrote articles and made comments that make him suspect. Samuel Astrachan's novel, written as fictional autobiography, is inspired by events and anecdotes found in Kaputt. As the novel begins, Malaparte arrives at Jassy in Romania to stay at the castle of the Countess Dimitriu. In residence are the Countess and her daughter Elena, Elena's friend, and the Countess's son, who may have been fathered by Malaparre. Fresh from the horrors of the Russian front and German-occupied Poland, Malaparte is sick of his life and desires. In Part Two, Malaparte passes through the crisis of his sickness in a cabin on the outskirts of Jassy. A pogrom is in the making; it is not Malaparte's sickness that is erupting but that of the world. Malaparte would do something grand to stop this madness, but his words and gestures fall short. In Part Three, Malaparte escapes from Jassy where he has been arrested. In Naples, he finds the Americans are the conquering army. The murders have ceased, but there is no end to the humiliations and suffering of the children. Unable to feel, he is inconsolable.
